Parchment Craft Guild Hints and Tips Book for Examination CandidatesEditor’s Note

The Parchment Craft Guild comprises a group of parchment craft enthusiasts dedicated to promoting excellence within the craft. Full membership is achieved by work assessment in exams open to anyone wishing to gain recognition of skill. The examination pieces are carefully selected, by acknowledged experts in the craft who are Guild members, to demonstrate a range of skills and use of tools available for the craft, at different levels of achievement. As different techniques and tools are developed so the exam pieces have changed over time to reflect this, yet at the same time care is taken to avoid losing techniques that are no longer as popular as they were. Feedback from the judges, and the marks awarded for each piece of work highlight areas of good technique and indicate where improvement is needed. Often the judges will give tips on how to achieve this and each Guild newsletter includes a selection of hints and tips on technique from the current round of exam papers. This booklet is the collected hints and tips from the first twelve years of the Guild together with technique articles, most of which have also been published in the newsletter. It is aimed at those who are planning to submit exam papers, but the advice is helpful for all parchment crafters.

Note: some points may appear to be repetitive but each provides a slightly different slant on the topic which I feel justifies the inclusion of both.

Acknowledgements -

Special thanks must go to the Fellows and Graduates of the Guild, who freely give their time to marking exam papers and providing the feedback which has been the basis of this booklet. As the process is anonymous they can never receive personal acknowledgement for a difficult task.

Thanks must also go to named Guild Members, who have provided articles for the newsletters which have been updated and reproduced here, and particularly to Pat Hosking for her humorous verses.

Apologies are offered if I have omitted to appropriately credit anyone with a contribution used in this booklet. It is entirely unintentional.

Group Public Liability Insurance for Guild
The Guild now has group public liability insurance. This covers all Guild members and volunteers who help at Guild events by carrying out tasks at the request of the Guild. It does not cover members' or volunteers' personal activities. It is up to individual members to check out and organise their own personal cover. As a guild we cannot make any recommendations; we should warn you that some members who teach at home have reported that they have been told that their household insurances may be invalidated by taking out this type of cover.
